Bremont Supernova Chronograph Is Going to the Moon — and It Is Never Coming Back

The British watch brand Bremont has announced something that is hard to place in a normal product context: a Supernova Chronograph will travel to the Moon’s south pole aboard Astrolab’s FLIP rover this summer. And it is going to stay there.

This is not a gimmick. The watch is physically integrated into the rover’s chassis and is not meant to be sent back, to monitor anything, or to transmit data. It is simply going to be there — silent and mechanical — on a surface with no atmosphere, no sound, and no mercy on materials.

Astrolab is an American space company formed by former NASA engineers, ex-SpaceX staff, and JPL specialists. Their FLIP (FLEX Lunar Innovation Platform) rover — a Lunar Terrain Vehicle in NASA’s framework — is the main payload on Astrobotic’s Griffin Mission One, which will lift off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and aim for the Nobile region near the Moon’s south pole. It is an area of extreme temperature swings — close to absolute zero in permanent shadow, scorching hot in direct sunlight. Bremont calls it “one of the most extreme environments in the solar system,” and it is hard to argue with that.

The timing is not random. 2026 is the year a formal time standard for the Moon — Coordinated Lunar Time, LTC — is expected to be established for the first time. The Bremont watch is not directly part of that project, but it finds itself in the same chapter of history.

The watch — Bremont Supernova Chronograph

The Supernova Chronograph is a 41 mm integrated wristwatch in 904L stainless steel with a black ceramic bezel and a DLC-coated middle case. The dial is inspired by the geometry of spacecraft solar panels — a perforated black galvanic lattice over a layer of Super-LumiNova. The movement is the BC77, chronometer-certified (based on the Sellita SW500), beating at 28,800 vph with a 62-hour power reserve. It is Bremont’s most technically expressive collection to date, and it marks a whole new “Space” category alongside the brand’s Terra Nova, Altitude, and Supermarine lines.

Before the watch could be cleared for transport it underwent so-called Spacecraft Protoflight Qualification — the same test protocol as the FLIP rover. Thermal vacuum tests, vibration tests, acoustic tests, electromagnetic compatibility. All documented to spacecraft standards. The mantra is “Test Like You Fly.” For us earthbound wearers it is also water-resistant to 100 metres, and prices start at around $8,000 on the rubber strap (about $8,250 on the steel bracelet), both with a quick-release system.

What it is really about

Bremont writes in its press material that a mechanical watch is one of the most human objects we know how to build — gears, springs, an escapement that divides time into something legible and exact. To leave such an object on another body in the solar system is, in a way, the strongest marker we can place. Not an instrument. Not a trap. A watch.

It is a romantic argument, but it is not an empty one. And it does not hurt that the watch actually looks really good.
